This domain, MJohnson.net, is 14 years old today! It was the first domain I bought. In the greater history of the Internet and the World Wide Web, that’s not anything great. But I think it’s still worth noting.

Many different forms of a web page have graced the domain and I won’t claim to have done anything grand in that respect. It’s always been a sort of laboratory for me to learn and experiment on what I could do on the web.

But I think it’s pretty impressive that I’ve used the same email address for all that time. Yes, I’ve had other email addresses in addition to michael@mjohnson.net. But that’s been my primary address since September 18, 1998. In fact, I have saved all important email going back to September 4, 2004, when I finally got my GMail invite and I began forwarding my email to my GMail account. I moved the domain to Google Apps on March 22, 2006 and have been here ever since.

Today, it’s so easy and inexpensive to run your own domain that I don’t know why everyone doesn’t use a personalized domain for email. Yes, email is old and often declared dead. But it’s still a very fast, inexpensive, reliable way to communicate. And it’s not going to disappear anytime soon.

Rules to live by: No food or drink within 18″ of or anywhere above your laptop or other valuable electronic devices.

Accidents happen. Accidents happen to all of us. They happen unexpectedly and often at the worst possible moment. Life happens, as they say. Actually most people would say another word happens. But life is messy and I’ll just leave it at that. It’s so messy and accident prone in fact that it would seem easy to avoid some problems. Like spilling liquid into a laptop.

It always seems easier to deal with when I make a mistake to my stuff. But I feel horrible when I break someone else’s things. And it’s hard to be forgiving when the thing I loaned to someone else is broken by them.

But life happens! And tonight it happened to a friend and co-worker. I don’t know the details yet except to quote, it’s “not working”. In the morning I’ll figure out how bad it is. In the mean time, I’m sharing this reminder.

No food or drink within 18″ of or anywhere above your laptop or other valuable electronic devices.

And also remember, once an accident with an electronic device has occurred, immediately remove any batteries that can be removed, disconnect from all external power, prop it up at the best angle to drain, and leave all the power disconnected until a professional can look at it.

It might be too late. Basically, you need to get it dry. Bag it with rice and hope for the best. But it’s never good.

I saw “The Avengers” at the movies yesterday and loved it. It may be one of the greatest action movies of all times! Great characters telling a good story with non-stop action. The director did not waste time explaining who these people are and why they do the things they do. The action starts early and just keeps building! This movie rocked!

I won’t give any spoilers, but I loved it! I’m by no means and expert on the canon of the Marvel universe so I can’t judge the movie on that. But the humor and relationships between the characters felt real. I’d love to see a “Black Widow” movie now. And Cobie Smulders was hot as Agent Maria Hill.

It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed seeing a movie as much as I enjoyed this one. Definately looking forward to more!

My friend Todd turned me on to this. It is a Korean movie, with sub-titles, and available on Netflix at the time of this writing.

Don’t let the sub-titles turn you off. This movie has love, sword fighting, fantastic archery, chase scenes, intense action and drama. I plan to watch it again soon!

The book is a relatively light-hearted and adventurous romp over the skys of France and Germany. He goes into detail about the feelings and experiences of learning aerial combat and the technical aspects as they developed. The narrator of this audio version does an excellant job and is a joy to listen to. On more than a few occasions I had to turn off the audio, as I usually listen and work and I couldn’t work while listening with baited breathe to find out how a particular dog fight turned out. Or else I stopped everything and pay close attention to the wonderful details of the action.

Everyone is talking about the Associated Press article today announcing that the Whoopie Pie is now the Official Maine State Treat. Which bothers me in all kinds of ways!

First, the LD71, An Act To Designate the Official State Treat and the Official State Dessert, was enacted on April 6, 2011 when it was passed by the state’s legislature. Our normally mouthy Governor, in a wise move, decided not to sign it on the grounds that there are more important things to do. Unsigned by the Governor for ten days is the same as if he accepted it. It will take effect 90 days after the 125th Legislature is adjourned. My point is this is week old news!

Second, what is the difference between a treat and a dessert? Not even Google knows! I’d much rather have a Whoopie Pie for dessert than a Blueberry Pie, though I love them both. Is one any less of a treat than the other? This is all about big business in government again. The Blueberry lobby must have spent some big bucks to over spend the mom & pop bakers of delicious Whoopie Pies. More proof of how sad the political process is.

Third, no one is talking about the Official Maine State Dessert being the Blueberry Pie. They are all talking about the Whoopie Pie. Clearly, the Whoopie Pie is the unofficial Maine State Dessert and the Blueberry Pie is just another popular dessert. Frankly, most Mainers I know will choose a decent apple pie over the greatest blueberry pie. How about ginger bread with real whipped topping or blueberry pie? WHich would you pick? Or maybe a Moody’s Diner Fourberry Pie? Something is wrong with the fact that no one is mentioning the official dessert. All the focus is on the treat!

Fourth, the bill itself lists the Whoopie Pie first! LD71 is written as follows:

An Act To Designate the Official State Treat and the Official State Dessert

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 1 MRSA §225 is enacted to read:
§ 225. State treat
The whoopie pie, a baked good made of 2 cakes with a creamy frosting between them, is the official state treat.

Sec. 2. 1 MRSA §226 is enacted to read:
§ 226. State dessert
Blueberry pie, made with wild Maine blueberries, is the official state dessert.

Effective 90 days following adjournment of the 125th Legislature, First Regular Session, unless otherwise indicated.

Clearly the Whoopie Pie is a greater dessert. No one cares about the blueberry pie. I rest my case…

I’ve been listening to The Leatherstocking Tales by James Fenimore Cooper as read by the volunteers at Librivox.org. Audiobooks and podcasts fill my 45 minute commute twice a day. And I’ve greatly enjoyed listening to the four tales so far.

The main character is known by many names. Born as Nathaniel Bumppo, he is often referred to as Natty Bumppo by those Christian enough to insist upon a Christian name. His best friend, Chingachgook, often calls him “Hawkeye” after the name given by the Delaware tribe for his keen eyesight. In his youth, the frontiersmen and army that hired him to supply food to the outposts called him “The Deerslayer” for his exceptional ability with the rifle. His enemies amongst the Six Nations of the Iroquois called him “La Longue Carabine” for the French description of his fine weapon. The rifle is longer than most and has earned a reputation of its own before Natty gains possession of it and is known as “Kill Deer”. Later, after the American Revolution, as more civilized people start new settlements and move into western New York, the new comers refer to him as “Leatherstocking” for the deer skins he continues to wears into his old age.

Of course the last book of the series, “The Prairie“, is not available in audio so I’ll have to find the time to read it the old fashion way. But so far, the whole series has been great!

Growing up in Maine, and being aware and understanding the impact the many indian wars of the late 17th and 18th century had upon the early settlers of this state, I’ve always found stories of the time period interesting. The Leatherstocking Tales take place over the course of 60 years mostly in present day New York Sate and Vermont, with lower Ontario and in his final years Missouri being part of the scene.

Over the many stories we follow Natty simply trying to make a living on the frontier the only way he knows how, by hunting and trapping. But through the French and Indian Wars, he is called upon to use his gifts to hunt the native americans working for the French. Many adventures and damsels in distress are amongst the tales, though Natty doesn’t seem to ever “get the girl” and lives a lonely life.

The author, James Fenimore Cooper, seems to make an effort to treat the Indians fairly by demonstrating that, like white people, there are both good and bad Indians. Chingachgook, the last of the tribe of the Mohicans, is a quiet and solemn chief, who eventually looses everything except his pride and his friend, the Deerslayer. For those that have seen the movie, “The Last of the Mohicans“, it is not the best book of the bunch.

Of course, as I being a historian, I remind myself that these stories are fiction. Though the grander events in “The Last of the Mohicans” are based upon historical battles, Natty and his acquaintances are not real. Still, I feel Mr. Cooper does a fair job describing the time period. And regardless, it’s a great adventure and Hawkeye is a legendary character to follow!

I saw the new “True Grit” this afternoon. It’s a great movie, already done.

This new remake by the Coen Brothers of Charles Portis‘ novel by the same name is a wonderful western. The landscapes and scenery is beautiful and has a very authentic feel. Jeff Bridges as Marshall ‘Rooster’ Cogburn is delicious and satisfying. A portrayal that exceeds the portrayal by John Wayne, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1970 for this role. Bridges is darker and filthier than the Wayne version.

But the performance of Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross stole the show. Steinfeld delivers on the sharp mind and determination of Mattie Ross and makes believable the idea that a 14 year old could be the one running her dead father’s farm. She is the focus of the movie, rightfully so, where Rooster was the focus of the 1969 version. I look forward to seeing more from Miss Steinfeld and am queueing up some of her past work.

There were two moments that bothered me and stuck with me after the movie ended.

The first is the continuity error that occurs following Mattie Ross’ swim across the river. Moments after exiting the water there is a camera angle change and a cold and drenched Miss Ross is dry. Considering how authentic the buildings, traps and accoutrements are presented throughout the movie, this error was a distraction for me. This may have been a comical homage to the original 1969 version which has the same continuity error. But why? I can’t understand why you would want to copy an error?

The second one is late in the movie. After a couple of days in the saddle, Mattie Ross goes to the river to get water. She carries a large wooden bucket. Where did that come from? They certainly didn’t travel with it and they are roughing it in the woods. Not an established camp.

Despite that, I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to fans of westerns. But anyone who has seen the original movie more than a couple of times will find the new version very familiar. For me, it’s as great as the original and I am left with same old question I have for the entertainment industry. Of all the untold stories in the world, why does Hollywood insist upon remaking well told stories?

“Did you know the network was down?”

Yes, I was asked that question today. Moments after the lights came back on following a power outage.

The power was not out for long. But it was out long enough that everything was black. The gasps and groans from the crowd in the unlit lecture hall next to my office rose sharply and subsided to quick chatter about what was going on just as the power returned. The power might have been out for 20 seconds.

Twenty seconds. Not a great deal of time! But when you are talking about electricity, it’s more than enough time to cause a problem in a world that relies upon lights, computers, the Internet, and all that goes with it.

Once the lights came back up, it was only a few moments before my phone rang.

“Did you know the network was down?”

No, actually I didn’t know for a fact that the network was down. But I strongly suspected it. My knowledge and understanding of electricity, computers and networks in conjunction with my previous experience of being without power, in some cases for many days in a row, led me to believe that some devices would need more than a minute or two to recover.

It turns out my suspicion was correct. Most services recovered on their own. Universal Power Supplies kept many devices up throughout the ordeal. One UPS, overdue for replacement, failed and the computer it was supporting needed help. And a router required a restart as it was not responding normally.

My mistake was answering the phone. Sometimes I need to be less attentive to the needs of others. But I realized my error by the fourth call, now just a few minutes after power was restored to the building. I ignored the phone, let it ring and continued through my checklist, confirming that everything was up and okay and dealt with the few devices that required attention.

But it dawned on me that some people are despicably spoiled by our modern society. That they have no patience to allow some time to recover from the lose of power. The length of time the power is out is not necessarily equal to or greater than the amount of time to recover from said outage. And apparently a few individuals don’t comprehend that.

Apparently, my normal attempts to be attentive to peoples needs does not build any faith in some individuals that I am on the case and taking care of the issue.

SO, to those that did NOT call me this morning, to those that did NOT ask me, “why’d the power go out?”, to those that continued teaching without a computer this morning…

God has blessed you with compassion, understanding and common sense beyond some of your peers and I thank you for exercising that gift.

Every week I change the photo in the header of this blog. But it just occurred to me that I should be highlighting them more.

So far, they have been all my photos and since I haven’t documented which ones I’ve used, I’m sure I will forget and repeat one at some point. So now I will try to post a short story of the photo for your enjoyment.

On July 17, 2001, a summer school student came into the office at Gardiner Area High School, in Gardiner, Maine, and reported a fawn running back and forth on the baseball field. So a Rob Disch, Scott MacMaster and I went out to see what was going on. We opened all the gates and tried to herd the young deer around to one of them. The little guy was exhausted and scared. He would let us walk right up to him, thus the great closeup of my photo. Then he would bolt off like lightening and run back and forth along the outfield fence and throw himself up against the fence trying to get out.

After 25 minutes of this, he finally gave up and went in the direction we wanted him to go. He finally spotted the gate and shot through it like a bullet, ran past the school and headed for the woods.

It’s not just for Civil War reenactors, though that’s the predominate time period at the moment. I would like to see all re-enactors and living historians in Maine use it to share news, events, ideas, and contact information. It’s closed, which means the members list is public but the content is private to members only.

Request to join and I’ll add you as soon as I can. Also, if someone is already a member they can add any friend. So if you know someone is missing then feel free to add them yourself.

Also notice that you can send email to the group to post and if a thread or discussion is not your cup of tea, you can unsubscribe to individual posts and comments.

Saddly, it’s been pretty quiet at MaineMilitia.com, this is an effort by me to move the discussion to where everyone is at these days. If you would like to share news and events, MaineMilitia.com is still there.

As I said, I’d like to see other time periods of living historians join in. If you know any then please add them and let them know.

Basically, the date of October 3, 2010 is related to the date of reunification of Germany 20 years ago. You can read a complete explanation of how Germany got to finalizing these payments at the articles below:

Rich Iott, the Republican nominee for Congress from Ohio’s 9th District, found himself in hot water this weekend when The Atlantic outted him as a World War II reenactor, with pictures of him in a German Waffen SS uniform.

And there lies the problem, it’s hard to defend the actions of the Schutzstaffel (SS) during World War II. And I won’t try.

I don’t know Mr. Iott so I can’t say what his feelings are on Nazism or the Holocaust. I’ll leave the mainstream media to sort that out. But I’ve been reenacting for 17 years and would like to make some general observations about people who reenact.

Historical reenactors and living historians all have a passion for history that goes beyond simple explanations and understanding that most people can comprehend. Being able to dress up and attempt to act and live in another time, to some degree, is a rewarding experience for us. You can find living historians for almost anytime period you can name. But some events have left a lasting impact on our world greater than others and a larger group of people are drawn to those eras. There is also an exponential effect from the larger groups.

The United States, the American Revolution, the American Civil War, World War I and World War II have a great enough mass of followers to garner attention and gain benefit from the exponential effect, the more living historians doing an era the more people attracted to the era.

And throughout the history of conflict, there has always been at least two sides. And all sides always find people wanting to portray them as a living historian or reenactor.

For some people their choice of an impression is very personal, for others it’s a matter of convenience. I know Civil War reenactors of the Federal army who could not imagine wearing the grey coat of a Confederate. And visa-versa, many Confederates that won’t go to sleep at night under a blue blanket. And just as many will happily cross-dress as the opportunity or need arises.

But none of the Confederates I know condone the restoration of slavery today. That’s a political question that has no bearing today. For most people it is the martial aspects of the past they are interested in. Like little boys pushing tin soldiers around a pile of dirt in the back yard, grown-up men dress up and play soldier. Some like playing cowboys and some like playing indians! It doesn’t mean the cowboys actually want to give small pox infested blankets to the indians. They just think the cowboy outfits are cooler!

And I suspect that was part of Mr. Iott’s decision to wear the uniform of the Waffen SS. It is pretty cool looking.

Of course these are generalities. Highly passionate people reenact history and their motives are very personal and individual. But I did want to suggest that a uniform alone should not condemn Mr. Iott. If he supports anti-semitism then it will come out. But his reenacting history is not proof of that.

When Mr. Iott says he did it to bond with his son and their shared love of history, I believe him.

But for any future politicians out there, I’d suggest staying away from reenacting the Mongol Horde, Spanish Conquistadors, and the Nazi SS!

Last week, I closed a blog post with a quote, “Watch the skies, everywhere! Keep looking.

Keep watching the skies!” Apparently few people are familiar with the movie “The Thing from Another World” (1951). The final scene is a classic! I was surprised I could not find that scene on YouTube. Well, in the interest of science fiction study, I’ve fixed this missing artifact of entertainment history.

Enjoy! YouTube video of final scene.

If you’ve never scene “The Thing from Another World” then I suggest adding it to your Netflix queue. It’s the story of a UFO that crashes near a scientific research site above the arctic circle. A team of Army Air Corps and American scientists recover a body frozen in ice. The ice thaws and anarchy ensues. The battle is truly legendary, in my humble opinion.

Does this final scene want to make you see the movie?

Today, he released two version of “New York Girls”. One if a more traditional, slower version. The second one is jazzed up and accompanied by a great band. If you know the song, I think you will enjoy this!

Watch the skies! From the category of you-just-can’t-make-this-up, I predict that soon, we will learn that contact has been made with other worlds! There is no other explanation for the news this week.

First we learn that the United Nations has an “Office for Outer Space Affairs“. I wonder if the aliens call on the green phone hotline?

Then Malaysian astrophysicist Mazlan Othman, who was reputed to be the head of UNOOSA, denied the report. But the UNOOSA has a phone in Geneva no one is answering? I’m sure extension 4951 is not “the green phone”! Who is answering “the green phone”?

All this in the same week that 7 pilots go public at a press conference in Washington D.C. telling their personal UFO experiences. And a month before Denver voters decide if the city should sanction an extraterrestrial affairs commission. Will they build a welcome center?

Of course, they are already in Texas and strangely Alvin Lawson died this week.

Coincidence? I think not. Watch the skies, everywhere! Keep looking. Keep watching the skies!

I’ve been listening to “Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and Assured an Allied Victory” by Ben Macintyre from Audible.com. The true story of the World War II British intelligence services deception plan, codenamed “Operation Mincemeat“, to fool the Germans before the Sicily Invasion in 1943. A fantastic story that took over 50 years to be fully revealed.

“Operation Mincemeat” was an idea to trick the Germans into believing a lie, in hopes of taking their attention off the obvious buildup to the invasion of Sicily. Flight Lt. Charles Cholmondeley, RAF, of MI5 took an idea from a memo by Ian Fleming, yes, the same future author of James Bond, and with the help of Lt. Cmdr. Ewen Montagu, Royal Navy, planned to drop a dead body with fake documents off the coast of Spain, in hopes that the Spanish authorities would turn the body over to the Germans. With any luck, the Germans would accept the documents as authentic and make their plans to defend southern Europe accordingly.

The story outlines the difficulty of the plan. From the unscrupulous acquisition of a dead body that no one would miss, to the creation of a Royal Marine who never existed. And finally, a submarine mission that almost went wrong and the Spanish officials who almost didn’t give the documents from the body to the Germans! In the end, the British Intelligence Services turn a dead drunken pauper into a secret hero who’s name is not revealed until over fifty years after it’s successful mission.

If you’ve seen the movie, The Man Who Never Was

, then you know part of the story. A great movie, but lacking much of the true history because the British were still protecting relations with Spain at the time. The movie was based upon a book, “The Man Who Never Was: World War II’s Boldest Counter-Intelligence Operation

“, written by Ewen Montagu, one of the men pivotal in planning “Operation Mincemeat”.

I enjoy the movie but now that I’ve heard the complete story as told in”Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and Assured an Allied Victory

” then I’d like to see a new movie. Only not changed and screwed up as Hollywood so often does to great history stories. The truth is greater than any fiction they could write!

Well worth the read is you enjoy World War II or spy craft!

I have enjoyed my iPod Touch, 1st generation, until three weeks ago when I finally bought a smartphone, the HTC Desire. I love the capability of having a computer in my pocket where ever I go. The iPod Touch provided and satisfied that need for me for a long time. Even though the first generation device is now showing it’s age, it will have a long life in our house as it will go to Erica soon, my six year old daughter and she will play games, listen to music and watch movies until it dies of abuse or it’s battery stops cooperating.

But I have two friends who just bought the new iPod Touch, 4th generation, their first computer in the pocket. So I thought I’d write up some of my favorite uses and the apps I used often on my iPod Touch.

Simplenote – My favorite app. It’s just plain text. But that text is easily synchronized with a website, my laptop, my desktop, my Android phone, and my iPod Touch. I type a note on one and once the device I’m on has access to a network then it syncs up to the cloud and then out to the other devices. I often type up notes on my laptop, grab my Touch and by the time I reach the car the note is on the Touch. I make changes or new notes while travelling and when I return to wifi it’s sync’ed back to my laptop. Other third party developers are helping make sure you can use this where ever you are.

Evernote – Evernote is Simplenote’s bigger older brother. The ability to capture anything by almost every means and make it searchable and sync-able is way cool. I use Evernote more for research and organizing that research.

Facebook – Yup, Facebook is the social network that I find myself spending the most time on. That’s where the people I converse with are hanging out so that’s where I am.

Kindle – I have never owned a Kindle. I’m more than happy reading on my iPhone. The Kindle app makes it easy. My wife is also a Kindle convert and buys many of her favorite author’s novels from Amazon for the Kindle.

Netflix – Yes, the iPod Touch screen is small. But I think it’s pretty cool that I can stream a movie to it. And I’m a total Netflix fan. If you have internet access and need to entertain a small person then this might be a great relief.

Calendar & Contacts – I rely heavily on Google Calendar and Contacts. Being able to sync these two necessities to all my devices has been a huge advantage to me. Geting Google Sync to work is not complicated but is a bit tedious but completely worth it. Use GMail, use Google Calendar, use, Google Contacts and then use them anywhere you need. Changes sync up when internet access is available.

Clock – The iPod Touch comes with a Clock app from Apple. Beyond the obvious uses of knowing what time it is in many parts of the world, we found that often Erica could be motivated to complete a task if she was timed. The built-in stop watch or timer was used more often then I would have expected.

Remote – Although there is much room for improvement with iTunes, it’s required when you have fallen in love with an iPod. So I use iTunes and at times will be playing music or a podcast on my computer. Remote allows you to have remote control of your computers iTunes from across the room.

TouchPad – TouchPad Pro turns your iPod Touch into your Mac’s remote trackpad. Way cool for presentations. Caution though, due to recent changes with Apple and the iOS, TouchPad may not work properly on the newer devices. See the website for details. Hopefully the suggested alternative is a good one or the developer updates the app.

Music – Hey, it’s an iPod. Many people play music. I play podcasts.

Photos – It’s a great looking screen! A long time ago a proud father would pull worn faded-edged pictures out of his wallet. Now he flips through a ton of images or plays a video!

Angry Birds – Angry Birds is a puzzle game where you sling-shot birds of various capabilities at structures created by pigs, in an effort to destroy the pigs. It’s crazy!

Of course there are many apps for the iPod Touch. And yes, I know these also work on the iPhone. But I’ve never had an iPhone and so I’m writing from my perspective as a Touch owner.

As an aside, I’ve found a replacement for all of these on my HTC Desire. I’m still learning Android and am not ready to write of it yet. But I love the Desire!
