Podcasting with iChat and Garage Band

A couple of weeks ago, Scott Wilder, Donald Burr and I played around with recording a podcast using Apple's iChat and Garage Band. Scott recorded a few minutes and then I recorded a few minutes. Everything seemed fine. Scott and I decided we would try an record an entire episode of the What Would Jesus Podcast.

One of the cool features of using this combination is that Garage Band captures each iChat participant into a seperate track. Allowing for a great deal of editing control and adjusting of individual's audio.

The integration of iChat and Garage Band makes the recording easy. Unfortunately for me, Garage Band crashed about 16 minutes in. iChat stayed up. I restarted Garage Band, started recording again. It crashed a second time about 18 minutes later. Fortunately, Scott was recording a backup on his end with Audio Hijack Pro.

I was able to find one or two reports of similar problems online. The suggested solutions are repair permissions and delete Garage Band's Preference files. I have not had a chance to get someone else on iChat to test these solutions. Garage Band on it's own records well over 30 minutes without issue for me.

So I'm sticking with Skype and Audio HiJack Pro for now.
